With the necessary demise and death of antique cosmologies and traditional religious paradigms dependent on external supernatural deities and devils, the modern religious challenge involves two simultaneous endeavors: To eulogize, bury, and grieve the theistic and monotheistic god-images and the religious paradigms dependent on them; and secondly, to bring fresh imagination to the meanings of god and religion that will satisfy the modern mind and ancient soul.
As long as our deities and devils are perceived to be external to the natural world, and beyond the human psyche, we will continue to do great harm to ourselves, to each other, and to our environment!
Dr. Wright will examine the three major monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) over the past 4,000 years. He will also describe the “myth of consciousness” growing out of Analytical or Jungian Psychology and will critique its relevance for the modern/postmodern mind and ancient soul. He will also describe his aim at a grounded and embodied mysticism and compare its potential practical meanings in theological and psychological language.

Dr. Jerry R. Wright is a Jungian Analyst in private practice in Flat Rock, NC, and offers lectures, retreats, and workshops on themes related to depth psychology and spirituality. In addition he has led pilgrimages to sacred sites around the world, including Iona, Scotland; Ireland; Machu Picchu, Peru; India; and SE Asia – Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos. He is a training analyst with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, and the author of Reimagining God and Religion: Essays for the Psychologically Minded (Chiron, 2018).
